Unit 3: The Giver (Novel Study)
The Giver Extra Credit Options:
Pick one of the options below that you are interested in and follow those instructions.
Due Thursday 12/1 in class.
***To get extra credit, you must have all of your assignments turned in. If you have a question about this, talk to Ms. Schumacher to make a plan.
1) Create a playlist for the book with songs that thematically connect to Jonas’s experience. Pick five songs that connect to this book and Jonas’s experience. For example, you could find a song that talks about feeling love for the first time or feeling alone and apart from everyone else. On a piece of paper, write the name of the song and artist and two sentences about how that songs relates to The Giver.
2) Create a drawing or piece of art based on the book. Take a scene or character from the book and make a detailed and thought-out drawing. This should be more developed than a stick figure drawing. Choose your medium and then write a few sentences about why you decided to draw your drawing.
3) Re-design the cover of The Giver. Though this cover does a good job of foreshadowing what happened, it feels a little outdated. How would you redesign the cover so that it pops off the shelf and students your age would want to read it? You can either draw or create a new cover on Microsoft word. (If you use pictures from the internet, make sure to credit them on the back and don’t just search “The Giver” and slap on what you find.)
4) Watch an interview with Lois Lowry and write a paragraph reaction (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YYGGs2lxtjY) After you watch it, write two paragraphs. First paragraph: Did anything she said surprise you? What new things did you learn? What new thoughts do you have about The Giver? Second paragraph: At the end, she says that many people have challenged the book, meaning that they think it is dangerous for children to read. Why might people think that this book is dangerous?
5)Write a page compare and contrasting with another dystopian novel. Many of you have probably read other sci-fi or dystopian novels before (ex. Divergent) or maybe other books in The Giver series. Write three paragraphs comparing and contrasting the two worlds with. Paragraph one: What is similar about the worlds? Paragraph two: What is different? Paragraph three: Which world would you rather live in? Why?
